Sports on a flying carpet in Copenhagen

After ten years, the city authorities in Copenhagen had had enough: the wasteland in the centre of the city where wind and cars had free reign was to be transformed into a trendy meeting place. The winning design as stunning as it was unique: a square in the shape of a flying carpet with a massive sports cage in the middle. Our agent CADO won the contract for it.

Prestigieus project
It took months of consultations with the city of Copenhagen, with the architects and with IJslander. Could IJslander deliver and install the prestigious Citybox oval with a diameter of almost 43m? You bet! Our Danish agent CADO convinced the city with a highly customised, transparent design equipped with sound-absorbing cables and was awarded the job. What’s more, the stainless steel material used is vandal-resistant, easy to maintain and remains beautiful. Even after years of use.

Missie geslaagd

After intensive contact with both CADO and with the architects, the details were finalised and production of the Citybox in Oldebroek could get underway. No small job considering all the manual labour needed. In mid-2014, the ‘floating’ sports cage was installed and delivered by IJslander in collaboration with Danish installers. The square is now widely visited and the Citybox s used intensively. Mission accomplished!

Flying carpet

Since 2014, the renovated town square of Israels Plads in Copenhagen has been a trendy meeting place for locals, visitors and tourists. The square consists of a grey, granite surface and is shaped like a flying carpet that hovers just above the ground between two worlds: the city and the neighbouring ├śrsted Park. Circles of trees on the Israel Plads square symbolise the park which seems to continue across the square.

The ‘folds’ on the east and west sides of the square are intended as seats. Various facilities are provided to entice visitors to sit on the square and have fun. Such as shelters with seats, benches around the trees, a green playground near the school on the square, a Citybox which allows play and exercise without disturbing visitors, and a trickling waterfall.
